The three member band called Fallout may be based out of Roanoke but have garnished more attention internationally than they have on the local scene. The popularity of their music in the Netherlands and Australia has surprised the band but record sales are record sales. Fallout consists of Andre' Burroughs on guitar (also in the band The Make) Dave Fueglein on bass (Capricorn), Marc Hamel on drums and the gang on vocals. Their discography currently includes a 10 song cassette and a 5 song red vinyl 7" record on the Hit Men Entertainment Label. The three guys wandered into the V office to answer a few questions before a semi-glamourous photo shoot in the alley.
V- How long has fallout been together?
F- six long years.
V- Why the name Fallout?
F- It has been so long we don't remember. oh yeah. we were going to name the band nuclear somebody and the fallouts and then we shortened it.
V- What kind of music do you play"
F- Punk rock 1977 style. Like the Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols ... good stuff.
V- Describe punk rock.
F- Webster calls it a form of rock music usually performed in a hostile, coarse offensive way, but Mr. Webster is wrong. It is not offensive.
V- Why doesn't Fallout play more often?
F- A lot of people ask us that. Gigs are hard to come by out of town. There are a limited number of clubs and tons of bands. Locally we don't want to wear out our welcome.
V- What do you feel about the local scene?
F- We understand the demographics of the area and can't complain. The scene in Roanoke is a lot better compared to 6 years ago. Most people go mainstream, but we wish more people would try alternative music. We think they would like it.
V- Describe a typical Fallout fan.
F- Groovy. Ranging in age from 13 to 30. Many types of people seem to enjoy our music even if they don't like punk rock.
V- Fallout has received some good reviews in publications like Maximum Rock N Roll, Flipside, and Tangent. How does that feel?
F- Cool.
V- What is more important in your music, emotion or volume?
F- Definitely emotion.
V- What is more important, fame or money?
F- Emotion.
V- Best thing about being in a band?
F- Seeing how people respond to the music. We love to hear positive feedback.
V- What is the worst thing?
F- We can't always afford to do what we want to do.
V- Who would you like to open for?
F- Tbe Clash reunion, which will never happen or possibly the backup band for Iggy Pop's next tour.
V- What does the future hold for Fallout?
F- Playing, hanging out, playing, hanging out, playing, hanging out, recording a new 71' to be released in the spring, playing and hanging out.
V- Any last words?
F- Playing and hanging out.
